I sometimes think so. He was a very clever person. He got peace in Vietnam (sort of), strengthened ties with both China and USSR, and so on. There was just something that happened at some point in his life, that "deformed" his personality, and made him bitter and obsessed with enemies from years ago. I actually feel sorry for him. He was one of those tragic figures, you know?

He doesn't get bashed enough, if anything. Certainly Henry Kissinger doesn't. Nixon sold himself out to Strom Thurmond to secure the nomination in '68(he was afraid he would lose it to the star of Goldwater's disastrous '64 campaign: Ronald Reagan) and scrupulously appointed justices vetted by him and his cadre of ex-Dixiecrats. He intentionally and maliciously sabotaged(with Kissinger's help) Vietnam peace talks in 1968 to ensure he could hang that failure on Hubert Humphrey in the election, he did his utmost to sabotage integration and smeared both the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement, launched the war on drugs, interfered in the Democratic primary, etc. etc. etc.
Like, where do you end? Nixon was an evil psychopathic monster who craved power for power's sake, and that he was intelligent and charismatic only made him vastly more dangerous.

I'm pretty sure you're describing Trump. Or have you been living under a rock since 2016?

He conspired behind Johnson's back to extend the war so he could take credit for ending it during his term.

This is true

Nixon's relationship with China is something that is too often overlooked.

Nixon was probably a smart guy, and he had an unusually progressive platform for a republican, but the dude had a lethal combination of being shifty and being exceptionally paranoid.
