Turns out it was all related to the stupid, unnecessary "toaster" loading mechanism of the NES.

It's like people say back pain is all in your head. But fuck it, if you do something and think it's working then continue doing it.

If Nintendo wouldn't have lied about the efficacy of rubbing alcohol for the connecting pins we wouldn't have ever had blowing them out.

I've had a 1 and 2 and blowing in the carts definitely worked.

Explain. Did Nintendo literally say NOT to use rubbing alcohol, but it was the best way to keep the cartridges clean and working?

Yes. It said on the back of the carts not to use rubbing alcohol. Nintendo heads at the time didnt want kids to be playing with rubbing alcohol.

They said don't clean it with alcohol on the back of NES carts.

My strategy was to not load the cartridge all the way so when you pressed it down it would make a banging noise.

Worked every time

It wasn't b/c they didnt want kids using rubbing alcohol, it was so people thought they had to buy the official Nintendo cleaning kits for $15.

Also: blowing on the carts can dislodge dust. Water doesn't corrode the game connectors either (i.e. it's perfectly safe to blow into a cartridge game).

The most effective way to clean games is 91% isopropyl alcohol + qtips. You can also use ammonia-based cleaning solvents, i.e. Windex.

With my N64 I usually put a little bit of isopropyl on the game contacts and just push and pull it rapidly out of the N64 and it usually gets games to work. Just a small tip for using top loader consoles.

You had to breathe hot breath on them, not blow. Worked every time.

The water condensation would lead to further oxidizing of the contact pins though.

Rubbing alcohol is the best.

I used alcohol and a Q-tips to clean it. Then dried with the other end.
At some point I also started to open up the console, and used a needle to make the contacts tighter. That helped for quite a while, until it became loose again and required re-tightening.

Rubbing alcohol is the best.

Suppose your rubbing alcohol is 40% rubbing alcohol.

Have you never wondered what the remaining 60% is?

That's why you grab the highest % rubbing alcohol you can get. I get 90%. You also use a Q-Tip to ensure that residue does not stick around the pins.

Still gonna be a lot more water than is gonna get condensated out of your breath.

But with hot breath you also dont clean it out with a Q-Tip. The residue sits there to evaporate instead of being wiped away.

Yeah that's true I suppose. You can use the clean end.

Never, ever get anything less than 90%. The rest is usually water I think. 90% or above is fine.
