Maybe the game of thrones tv show is the reason why George r r Martin is taking a while with the books, maybe he feels like the tv show is handling characters and stories a certain way that are better than what he envisioned so he doesn't want to compete with the HBO show's ending.

No, dude doesn't give a fuck. GRRM made his money, and the only reason why he's even pretending he's working on the books is so the fanbase doesn't rebel against the show and it's upcoming spin-offs. GoT is as close to a conclusion to ASOIAF as anyone is going to get.
