Ravenclaw

Once in a blue moon, Hufflepuff.

I actually read of the divergent series and by the end I was thoroughly determined not to think about that again.

And I didn't have cable growing up, so I never watched any Hidden Temple stuff.

Hufflepuff is the house for people who are: not particularly courageous, not particularly ambitious, and not particularly scholarly.

It's the one people get if they don't have strong affinities to anything else. Gryffindor attracts the brave (boastful) types, Slytherin attracts the ambitious or power hungry types and the wizard supremacy types, Ravenclaw attracts the intellectuals like the doctors and inventors, but also attracts the philosophers. Hufflepuff is there for kids who don't have strong affinities to the other house values or people who value stuff like hard work, consistency, and cooperation.

Actually, apparently they make pretty talented politicians because of their people skills. That appreciation for cooperation is a reflection of Hufflepuff's house values.

Gryffindor is for the brave, adventurous, athletic, doers of the world. Esstentially the jocks.
Slytherin is for the sly, sneaky, psychopathic manipulators of the world. Esstentially the politicians.
Ravenclaw is for the intelligent, hard-working, dedicated sharp thinkers of the world. Esstentially the brains.

And Hufflepuff are.... Everyone else. Who have little of those qualities.

Gamefaqs is full of underacheving potheads and virgins and dudes who just sit around talking about games and how everything new is bad and everything from their childhood is great.

Hufflepuff are basically "The other guys" and Gamefaqs is a collection of "Other guys."

There are a few psychopaths but even so.

slytherin is "ambition". Cao Cao from Dynasty Warriors would be a Slytherin

technically you can be good or evil in any of the houses. it's just that Rowling isn't a very subtle writer

there is a leaked video game coming that's an rpg set in hogwarts and you can be in any house and be good or evil independent of your house choice. hoping that the story in that game is really good and shows that that world can be cool, if not held back by Rowling's writing

They say this but don't reflect it very well since all the Nazis went to Slytherin and none of the Slytherin boys defended the school.

Yes. Gryffindor is full of pathological rule breakers and always has been. They do a lot of thrill-seeking for its own sake and don't do well with boredom. So they get in to a fair bit of unnecessary trouble.

One thing I never got is how the Houses always seemed to have an even number of students.

That makes no sense because at least 50% of he students would be sorted into Hufflepuff (and that's low-balling it), not to mention that Dumbledore flat-out says that you can tell the Sorting Hat which House you want to be in (or not be in, as in Harry's case)

And then there's the concept of a "Hatstall" when it's hard to choose between two (or more) Houses

Harry was a Hatstall between Gryffindor/Slytherin
Hermione was a Hatstall between Gryffindor/Ravenclaw
Neville was a Hatstall between Gryffindor/Hufflepuff

and just to make things more convoluted, Neville wanted to be put in Hufflepuff but the Sorting Hat insisted on Gryffindor...

Divergent is weird in that it tries to be some sort of Harry Potter/Hunger Games hybrid (I've never read any of the books, I've only seen the first movie and I kinda got the gist of it)

But instead of houses or even clans, it's really more like a caste system.

You got the poor castes: Abnegation and Amity
The wealthier castes: Erudite and Candor
And finally the warrior caste: Dauntless (well, if you count running around doing parkour being a "warrior")

What's really weird is that when a person comes of age they undergo a test that determines what faction they'll be in for the rest of their lives, and it's not necessarily the one they're born into. The weird part is that the person is still free to choose whichever faction they want regardless of the results.

It makes you wonder why anyone would choose Abnegation or Amity, which are essentially the poor and working classes respectively. (Erudite is like the bureaucrat faction while Candor is the lawyer/scientist faction)

Whatever.
