Research laser weapons before better armor, as you need to be able to take out the stronger aliens as they show up. Better armor will not help you against Chysalids if you are still using bullet guns when they show up.

Unlike XCom 2 there is never really pressure to complete missions, no time limits at all IIRC. So your best strat is to just overwatch creep and slowly activate pods one at a time
