It just seems like they spend the whole episode trying to figure out the mystery, but they never do and they just say, "welp, I guess we'll never know".

That's kind of the whole thing. Two people with limited resources trying to wrap their heads around something so much bigger than what they know there's no way for them to really conclude anything beyond "It remains a mystery." Sometimes there's a definitive conclusion but no too often.
