Black Panther basically became a key cornerstone in black culture so using the whitest guy you know can be seen, at best, as clueless and, at worst, offensive to black culture.

Using a white man in the advertising can be seen as tone deaf to the cultural impact Black Panther had on black culture.

They "apologized" to try to suppress any "controversy" surrounding it before it became bigger than it did.

It just comes across as potentially insensitive. Which can open its own can of worms on whether or not it should be insensitive but that's just the way it is for this
