Armor, surviving more fights is more useful unless your character is built for speed, then weapons so long as you hit first and take no damage.

I favor more attack power usually, unless the attack power boost is minimal in which case having more armor is more useful.

I generally try to stay balanced. If materials are required and limited, I usually boost armor first. But don't totally ignore attack power. You can't attack and survive if you're squishy, though.

Depends on which I'm having more trouble in at that point, killing stuff, or staying alive.

Generally, though, I think it's more often I lean toward getting armor, because usually the abilities/skills/spells/whatever you learn are more geared toward killing stuff more efficiently, so you can improve that with EXP whereas regarding defenses you're usually limited to whatever best armor your money can buy, with EXP only helping you in limited fashion via stat upgrades on levelups(which also improve your attacks so it's a moot point comparing them here).

It depends on the game and what mechanics are actually useful.

At the start, I tend to increase damage to trudge through the opening/tutorials, but after freedom is gained, experimentation begins.

Depends on the game. If it's one of those games where you don't notice a visual difference I'll usually take weapons to try and kill shit faster. If you can notice the change, then armor to look cooler.

Higher attack almost always means being able to kill normal enemy encounters much quicker, which means I can earn enough money to upgrade my armor much quicker than if I was trying to earn money to upgrade my weapons after upgrading my armor first.

Played a lot of RPGs, but never played one that rewarded me for upgrading armor before weapons.

Most turn based rpgs, if you go for weapon first, you will be heading back to the inn a lot quicker and more often, which wastes time and money, so I almost always get a shield or piece of armor I don't already have equipped first, and then upgrade the weapon.

Usually a trip to the inn isn't nearly as costly as spending 2-3 times as long fighting every battle. You can usually fight random battles right outside the town.

Plus, most turn based RPGs have a magic user with healing abilities. So you can use MP to heal your party members quite a few times. The only time you'd need to go to the inn is to replenish your lost MP used for healing.

It doesn't take much for early monsters to die. It typically takes 2 hits with the first weapon, and the upgraded weapon will lower that to 1.5 hits, so it doesn't matter much. Specially if you start out alone.

I like to boost armor first. I'm always in it for the long haul.

Much like chess and magic, I prefer defense and waiting for my opponents to make the mistake so I can walk in with a counter and shred them.
