I think the reason the first Mortal Kombat works so well is because it very much feels like a B-movie, just like the games themselves do.

We got a guy with things coming out of his hands, another guy who freezes stuff, and then theres a man who as far as I can tell is made out of electricity I mean how did he disappear like that WHAT IS GOING ON HERE WHO IS THIS GUY?!

The movie's soundtrack was excellent. Killer tunes for the best fight scenes, especially Reptile's.

Also to make use of the CGI tech at the time. I remember when it was in theaters, Entertainment Tonight doing a feature on the breaking edge CGI technology of the movie and showing Sub-Zero creating his freeze move. Probably wanted to make sure Sub-Zero didn't upstage Scorpion in the movie.

A bit of trivia, the Liu Kang vs Reptile fight was actually filmed at the last minute because test audiences either thought there weren't enough or weren't satisfied with the other ones. That's why Johnny Cage suddenly disappears during the fight because his actor wasn't present when it was filmed.

Yeah, I remember finding this out. From what I remember, Kano's design was made to somewhat match Movie Kano's (Goddard's) from then on, and they've kept that look even after he (Goddard) died in real life. Good stuff and another reason why Kano's the best fighter!
