this, also it doesn't seem to make a difference how fast you rotate the analog stick as long as you're not going super slow. Just pick a nice steady speed that doesn't hurt your hand

pulling back on the rod while reeling in seems to make a bigger difference than anything.

This. It was a tip in the strategy guide (Which I bought only after I beat the game) that you hold up on the left stick for a second or two and do a quick flick down so Arthur pulls up. It makes the fish "warp" a little bit ahead and makes fishing easier.

You don't have to go nuts on it, just rotate with your thumb normally. When they start to struggle, hold the right stick in ANY direction and don't move it. Then when it stops struggling, pull down on the left stick and start rotating the right one again.

It took me forever to do the old veteran legendary fish mission, but I realized when he was struggling I wasn't keeping the line taught with the right stick held in any direction. Once I did that, it took a bit, but I slowly caught him.

Or just read the tips telling you to do this that pop up on the top left corner every time you fish

Or just read the tips telling you to do this that pop up on the top left corner every time you fish

I must have missed that? If the tip said to hold down the whole time I'm talking about something different.

if every non fishing game with a fishing section removed said section, there would still be too many games with fishing in it

3) Simultaneously, press down on right analog stick (don't rotate) to prevent line from extending
4) Reel in when tired
5) Repeat
