For anyone who doesn't remember, this is the kind of thing I mean:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/wii/928518-super-smash-bros-brawl/faqs/52067

I did something like this for both Melee and Brawl: an information guide with regards to the origins of characters, moves, stages, items, music, etc. I didn't end up doing one for Smash 4 given the growth of YouTube, the more readily available information, and people who created content greater than ASCII text.

But nowadays, there's so MUCH information, and the game itself gives so little now that Trophies are a thing of the past, that I wonder if it's worth consolidating the info into one file, or perhaps a series of files. With the formatting I can do on FAQs, the guide can be more easily searchable.

I was speaking to a coworker yesterday and she was telling me how she was having a hard time figuring out all the Smash characters and who's from what. She's not huge into gaming, so she was the one who made me think about getting back into this.

And this guide (or series of guides) would cover EVERYTHING, including all the Spirits. I say series of guides, because I've been thinking that having one guide would be too cumbersome, that I should make separate guides for Characters, Stages, Items, Music, and Spirits.

Any thoughts? Would you read such a guide?

I've heard many of the world of light battles are references in some way or another, like this one (spoilers?) https://files.catbox.moe/b396ci.png

I feel like just one person making a guide would probably miss stuff though. no offense meant or anything there's just a ton of content

Same but the opposite. Youtube clips take forever to watch when I can consume the same information in a fraction of the time in print.

Why bother? A lot of Nintendo hardcore fans know most of the backgrounds to the characters.

It won't be an ASCII FAQ. It'd be formatted. Searchable. Organized. Table of Contents.

Nonsense. Why would you waste 30 minutes watching a video explaining who Mario and Luigi are when you just want to know what that weird winged devil thing that moves the screen around is.

Ctrl+f: Devil

Way quicker.

Don't try to tell me you've never learned about a new character, location or item from a Smash Bros game before. That would just be silly.

Yeah good luck with that. Ultimate is the one of the most comprehensive crossover and callback titles in gaming ever.

I would offer help but I wouldnt even know where to begin because while Ive written 2 FAQs those were a while ago and not super thorough.

Well

Mario is probably a pretty good pick to start with.

no offense but i feel like a guide like this is kind of pointless in 2018

if i want to look up who a Spirit is or something i can just google the name and find a Nintendo wiki or something that has a whole page on it.

so my question is what utility would this guide provide that other sources wouldnt have?

Maybe I'm old school, but a single consolidated place for that information has great value, even just as something to read through while bored.

That's brilliant. :-P

I'd probably begin with the characters. Much of the work I've already completed. Unlike my Brawl guide, I don't think I'd make an attempt to include all roles in all games. It's just... too much and ultimately not all that useful.

The big task will be the Spirits, because, as was said, I'd have to include not only a short bio on them, but also their battles and any references that those battles make. My personal favorite thus far is the Ness's Father battle that pits you against an invisible Snake.

Nintendo has some really obscure shit in those smash games, including games that were never released outside of Japan. No single person knows all of that stuff.

Yes, this is accurate. They tend to use characters to represent the spirits. They used Wario spamming side+B to represent Excitebike.

Hell it took me a while to make a topic that listed the franchises referenced before they revealed spirits!

It might be beyond the scope of what you're talking about, but I'm interested in the origins of the character's movesets - not just the special moves, but tilts, smash, etc. I remember closely following moveset breakdowns of Dragon Ball FighterZ characters and remembering what poses are from certain chapters/episodes of the series.

but tilts, smash, etc

I did this for past versions of the guide, where applicable. For example, characters like Captain Falcon and most Pokemon don't really have any actual attack references, other than past iterations of Smash.
