Playing through Breath of the Wild now and it definitely captures that same feeling of playing through OOT.

Huge open world with very little direction. So many different things to uncover. Exploration feels really good and the world reward you for it time and time again.

For 20 years now theyve been trying to recreate OoT to the letter, instead of capturing the feeling that the game gave.

Now lets see if they spend another 20 years trying to recreate BOTW.

BotW isn't that great. Micro managing your character slows down and constrains play for little reward

The cool thing about BOTW's formula is that it can be a lot more variable. Anything that's completely open with some goals to find and a final boss is going to be a faithful follow up.

The Ocarina formula was extremely rigid in comparison and they had a tough time following up on it.

BotW is traditional. OoT is a garbage ass game that broke away from original series conventions in order to handhold a casual audience through it.

I started playing BotW sometime last week, and I've been enjoying it, so far.

the only thing that I don't like is how the weapons/shields/bows can break.

I've never played Ocarina of Time (I wasn't really into single player games, as a kid), though, but I did play through Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.

I like it and dislike it at the same time. I like how it keeps gear interesting through the course of the game and forces you to use different things.

I just hate how easily they fuckin break. You get like 8 hits and then the fuckin thing disintegrates. You catch someone one in one one of those flurry combos and a brand new weapon literally break from one combo.

My version is that of one who started with TLoZ and not someone whose first console was the N64.

OoT was a huge letdown to me and all the 3D crap that it inspired afterwards. BotW is the only good 3D Zelda.

idk, I feel like just having a limited inventory can get you out of your comfort zone to try out new gear, but BotW had to give you weak weapons and a limited inventory, so it got to be frustrating sometimes.

I like both games in their own way, but I don't think they feel similar at all. Also I think BotW has some glaring issues that came from the forced port to Switch. Primarily the way everything slows down when you have to open menus. If it was on the gamepad as originally intended I think things would have felt a lot smoother.

Majora's mask is the best one of the bunch (OoT, MM, WW, TP, SS)

And Link to the Past didn't start it, Zelda 2 started it. It got progressively more formulaic with LttP and later Link's Awakening. OoT however did the killing blow by removing the majority of the monsters and making the dungeons predominantly about puzzle solving.

Thus when ALBW came out I was overjoyed and just wanted more of it. I had no idea that were even capable of something like BotW.

They'll probably split Zelda games in two different directions like they did with Mario (well Mario platformers now have three different styles).

There's no chance they're going to leave behind BOTW since it's the most popular Zelda in nearly 20 years.

Oh its one of the best exploration games Ive ever played. The world design is absolutely fantastic and everything is built in mind to give the play incentive to be inquisitive.

You see all these towers in the distance and you ask how do I get there. How do I scale it

You see mob camps peppered about and you think of interesting ways of to tackle them.

You leave no stone unturned because the possibility of treasure.

You find something curious in the world and you dig a little deeper, employ a little common sense and you absolutely will be rewarded for it.

They absolutely nailed the spirit of Zelda. Which to me is two words. Go. Discover.

I'm going to have to disagree with the whole incentive to explore. The shrines were fun to find and do, they were unique but most things became way too repetitive and predictable.

I will agree that stuff always in the background keeps you wondering, though. Until you realize how pointless the treasures and fights are.

-Small enemy variety, many iconic monsters absent

-Not enough unique equipment. I understand they don't want people to horde stuff but most of the treasures are pure garbage or fodder. You see a camp, quickly dispatch it and know it was a waste of time unless you needed moblin parts for crafting.

You might be a bit intrigued for the first few hours but they didn't really make the world rewarding. It doesn't help that the world was designed around you having no hearts and minimum equipment. Not much of a challenge anywhere.
