Assuming hobos are lazy is just a sure sign of stupidity. It takes more work to live like that than to maintain a normal, even low end, life.

There are so many things to factor in for a pet's health now. Flea medication, vaccinations, etc. You don't have to be obsessed with your pet to want to take care of those things.
You would have to be a real piece of poop to just buy an animal on the corner and throw it in the backyard like they did in the old days. What do you mean? Pets should be taken seriously (l would say almost as seriously as a child), especially pets that have a long lifespan. lf you get something like a parrot that can live over 50 years that's a big commitment and you need to be ready to take care of it for most of, if not the rest of your life just like you would for a son or daughter.

The alpha imprint thing is tricky. You dont have to be a dick to your dog because you control the resources: he eats when you want to, if you want to, and you feed him. I am with OP and my wife and I have dog. Granted if we were seeing eachother before she got the dog, I would have never allowed her to get one.
