Why do another match between a loser and the winner of the whole tournament, especially when Link beat Cloud to get to the final in the first place?

Were nerds mad that the final battle was Link vs. Zelda?

Double elimination tournaments are pointless when it's up to a vote.

In a competition, a losing contestant can figure out what they did wrong and maybe win the second time around. But with a voting process, the same people are going to vote the same results each time. It's not like a losing character is going to have a game come out during the tournament which will boost their popularity.

So if Link loses does that mean there will be one more Link vs. Cloud vote?

Link has won so many that he might as well win every year. L Block won solely because 4chan wanted to have a meme win instead of Link again.

Only if you think the "crowd" has a totally ordered preference list. Yes, Cloud vs Link will end up the same both times, but if people prefer Zelda to Link, Link to Cloud, and Cloud to Zelda for example, order of elimination actually impacts results.

Now getting a short chain like that is unlikely, but more complicated structures are certainly present.
