Didn't this same shit happen with GTA V and The Last of Us? I can't remember if GTA V won a ton of awards and then missed out on GOTY like this or not though. Nah, RDR2 was production value heavy, and it won awards for that accordingly (Best Narrative, Best Score, Best Audio Design, Best Performance) But the game itself was muddled by it's adherence to these production values. The slow animations and janky horse combat adds to the experience, but takes away from the fun at times. I don't exactly know the criteria for "best direction". If it's based soley on the cinematics, well I think God of War gets it for having bigger moments overall than RDR2. (also apparently Atreus was played by an actual kid?) If it's gameplay direction, well, the gameplay never suffered from the cinematic experience like RDR2 did at times. And in the end, if a game is more fun even if it is by virtue of not being as janky, it should get the GOTY nod. --- America is a tune.
