It's just so completely different.

I liked X-2 because I'm in love with Yuna and Spira and it was nice to see how things changed after FFX. But man it was hard to wrap my mind around such an incredible change of tone

it was easy for me to wrap my mind around the change in tone
ffx was a world where sin could kill you and everyone you love at any moment so everyone lived in fear and was miserable

ffx-2 is a world where sin is gone and the people can finally have fun and yuna can finally live for herself and not everyone else.
its nice to see how much happier the place has gotten since sin was defeated
and there are a few scenes in the game that do have a similar tone to ffx-2 like the main villains tragic story which is rather dark for such an upbeat game

it makes sense because they've clearly had the potential to advance their technology and society but it was always torn down by Sin. so they're showing us how quickly they're progressing now that they're free. and eventually Shinra will rise to power and the events of FF7 take place

Back when FFX-2 was first getting previewed I thought Paine was Lulu after a sequel makeover.

rikku is kind of just a tag along while yuna and paine get all the focus which always kind of bugged me cause i liked rikku in ffx

I was annoyed how when the character would sing in combat they'd just give out a half assed "la la la la".

It should have busted out a vocal track on top of the battle music. That would have been sick if they'd taken the effort to make it good.

In order for FFX-2's story to be good, it'd need far more drastic changes. Pretty much on "throw the whole baby out and make a new one" level.

Luckily for FFX-2, its gameplay is so awesome that it doesn't need a great story.

It's not the same planet though. Long after Shinra's (the boy) death, after travel to distant planets is possible, that's when the people of Spira arrive on Gaia.

It does mean that Via Infinito takes significantly more effort, so in general I agree.

X-2 was one of those games I forced myself to complete because I was convinced it would get good, but it never did.

The whole thing felt like a fan-made sequel start to finish, with so little effort put into, well, everything.

yeah it does make them really powerful
the monster arena is great for getting the blue bullet spells too
i got white wind and mighty guard 2 of the best blue magic for defensive purposes in the game in minutes

I thought about this when I played the remaster earlier this year. X-2 is a game about leaving the past behind. For Spira as a place, and for Yuna personally. She knows Tidus is gone, and he can't come back now that the fayth all left. But when she gets a vague hint that he *might* still be alive it kicks off a whole adventure. She spends the whole game coming to grips with the fact you can't go back to how things were and trying to is destructive.

Until the good ending of course, where the fayth in the farplane are like "yeah we can bring him back. You wanna?". It feels cheap and it definitely cheapens Yuna's considerable growth she had over the game. At least you can tell the fayth no and get the normal ending.
