Define what you think a fighting game is. Then see if Super Smash Bros can fit under those parameters. That is how you decide whether something is part of the genre.

You don't look at something and then decide to classify it, you make the classification and then see what fits under it.

Most definitions of Fighting Game include Smash. It has other "tags" as well that make it more than other Fighting Games. I'm sure someone could come up with a definition that doesn't include Smash, but it won't be the most common one.

I want to go out on a limb and say I think the people who don't want to classify Smash as a fighting game are the same kind of people who probably only hang out with other hardcore gamers and don't attend a lot of casual social events.

Most non-gamers aren't gonna see Smash and go oh wow, they have Star Fox? And look at all the versions of Pit we get. That's some real Sakurai bias.

They're gonna get about 20 seconds into your explanation of the controls and zone out because they don't care about what direction you have to push to activate your down special.
They just want to grab another beer and play Mario Party.
