It's what should have been the biggest news in the world for the last week but it seems like a lot of mainstream media isn't reporting on it. Briefly, a scientist in China implanted a woman with genetically edited embryos trying to mimic a known mutation that makes people immune to HIV, bypassing a million ethical, technical, and regulatory concerns regarding the methodology, rationale and procedure. Beyond that, the gene editing didn't do what he thought it-- he introduced new mutations that have never been studied. The whole situation is being widely condemned not just by the scientific community but China as well.

The whole thing is absolutely insane. Apparently now the Chinese scientist is missing. Read The Atlantic article if you really want to understand the scope of how fucked up it is.

The craziest thing about this to me is that all of that baby's future descendants will be enormously impacted by this. Though honestly I fully expect gene editing to be much more accepted by the time he/she would even have grandkids.

It's a pair of twins, so two lines of genetically altered descendants even.

Unless they both just have one child and then those children have offspring exclusively with each other >_>

Maybe, but there are likely a ton of off target effects meaning tons of other regions of DNA that have been affected, especially if Cas9 is still active in the babies which we don't know. It's entirely likely the babies won't have a normal lifespan.
