Deny. Not everyone gets to travel the globe and meet people of other countries and languages. As such have no need for other languages.

Bad take.

There's no need unless you actively experience the language on a regular basis.

It depends entirely on where you live, who you interact with, and what media you consume. If you learn French, live in the middle of nowhere in the US, never plan on traveling to France, know no French people, and consume no French media, then you'll never use it.

This must be a troll topic

I know engineers and lawyers who only speak one language and idiots who speak 2. Pretty sure most people could learn a second language, they just don't bother, unlike people who are forced to learn English (which is super similar to their first language and not too hard of an accomplishment) to play video games or post on forums or something then subsequently act elitist about it.

It is breathtakingly stupid to assume that of someone. The fact that we even have more than one language, and aren't standardized across the globe is a testament to how poorly our civilization has handled itself, despite having a global communications grid.

My job has me dealing with all sorts of people who speak broken, half-english bullshit, which really pisses me off. I've had to let people go because they just can't speak it properly.

Language education is miserable business because people think that taking classes is the golden ticket to it.

Which isn't true at all, a good language class should technically be enabling you to grow out of going to those classes, but a learner also must enable themselves by seeking out stuff to read/listen to in that language. It's not always fun, and you do have to pay quite a bit up front to get to the "good" parts of most languages, but that initial grind is cheap considering how much media opens up depending on which language you learn.

And, speaking will eventually come on its own once you're dealing with it/listening to it/reading it every day.

To the point of this thread though, knowing only 1 language sucks if you've ever lived in an environment where 90% of people do know 2+ languages.

Monolinguists are not necessarily idiots. However, people that try to find something to be elitist about definitely are.

Is it elitist if it's genuinely a valid point you have over another person?

D but then again public schools do offer courses like Spanish, French, Chinese, and in some cases even German from what I have experienced so the excuse to not learn a secondary language for at least its basics is getting smaller by the day.

Public school language education in the US is entirely abysmal and incredibly outdated in its methods. And in my entire area all they offered was Spanish and French

It is a decent way to start but yea it doesn't mean that you'll learn that much substantial knowledge to be fluent in it.

Yeah, learning a second language is as easy as taking base level classes enough to hold a base level conversation. After that it's all about consuming media

I came here to say this. My wife and I both speak multiple languages, and we know very few people that are multilingual. My oldest children are multilingual as well.

A person's job is a bad measuring stick for his intellect.

I study engineering and a lot of it so far can be done with zero understanding by rote

Learning a second language is good for the brain. It improves your memory and develops you as a person. It really is a worthwhile effort, regardless if you'll ever need it.
And if you're interested, you will find a practical use for it.

Exactly. It's more of a "language makes you smarter" rather than "smart people speak more languages"
