The biggest problem the AVGN has is that he basically used up all the games he has actual nostalgia for a long time ago. Most of the new videos don't seem to have any passion behind them, just seems like he's going through the motions to get paid.

Yeah, this is the big thing for me. He started going downhill in like 2008 or 2009. There were still decent videos after that but they are really just awful now. I never found the shit jokes appealing, but there was other stuff to like, and I'm not sure if James gets that since it seems like he does even more shit jokes now. But his acting is totally phoned in and there's horrible green screen in like every video now. The non-green screened parts are just like the same boring shot of him on the couch, makes every episode feel so samey.

Also James and Mike Mondays kind of ruined the character for me since real James seems totally clueless and uninterested in games, even ones you'd think were classics to him

A lot of the recent ones are bad but I did like the amiga cd episode

I disagree wholeheartedly. His stuff is the same quality. It's funny and genuine. He never had a cringe period where he tried to be something he's not (inb4themovie). I also like him as a man.

If you still like it that's one thing but to say it's the same quality is asinine. The humor is debatable I guess, not like that was ever really his strong suit. But genuineness? His acting is obviously way worse in more recent videos. Plus he talks all the time about games being fan requests he didn't know much about, vs. older videos of stuff he played as a kid having high expectations because of the movie he loved or whatever. Which one sounds more genuine?

For the cursing in his recent vids, James frequently said that he's more obligated to include those kinds of jokes and words because he's received constant criticism about it in the past for mellowing out whenever he would release an episode where he doesn't go on a few seconds without poopy jokes.

So yeah he begrudgingly does them and it definitely shows. But it far from ruins any quality of the overall video because there are far more to them than just potty humor

Have you seen his Earthbound review or his Seaman review? That was some of his most genuine content. Especially Earthbound because he really enjoyed the game but was still able to get across criticisms due to it being a game of its era. But he shared various fan theories and even had his own set of theories and had a lot to say about every aspect of the game.

AVGN never had to always be about how he hated a game as a kid due to it being let down. If anything, currently James is capable of far more love and disappointment lol

That sounds like James making an excuse for his weak comedy. I've seen people complain about the nerd not being angry, but not explicitly about a lack of poop jokes. You can be angry without making a bunch of word salads about feces

Seaman was over three years ago. Earthbound was fine but he rarely reviews games like that. Most of his recent reviews seem to just be mediocre obscure games that nobody (especially James) cares about

Is the concept of being genuine really that hard to understand? Taking an interest in the game, actually being angry and having valid complaints, etc. All that stuff just seems so forced in most modern AVGN videos

The episode itself was just really lame. If I didn't like crude humor I wouldn't have watched literally every single AVGN episode over the past decade. The game wasn't interesting enough and the guest was just injecting lame forced humor that made it worse.

I cried the day that I realized that AVGN is more Mike Matei than James. I was heartbroken.

James, in irl life, actually knows very little about video games. It's actually Mike Matei that plays and ghostwrites most of the AVGN material. This becomes very obvious if you watch the "James & Mike Mondays" let's play videos, the possibly most boring unfunny let's-play videos on youtube. Obviously Mike Matei isn't that funny or knowledgeable about games himself, but at least he actually still plays games. James is clueless when it comes to anything outside of a handful of surface Atari & NES games that everyone has played anyway.

James is in such an awkward position: all he cares about is making awful movies, but the only creation of his that had any success is a video game nerd character who got a bunch of fans from the retro-gamer crowd, and now James is forced to work his ass off catering to them for a living. You can tell that video games were never really a big thing in his life outside of early childhood; James is basically being forced to live up to a role that just isn't really him. And now that he went and had a handicapped kid with his mediocre wife, he has no choice but to continue being a fraud and milking his fanbase for all their worth, in order to support his kid and his wife who will eventually divorce him and take all his money that he made from his undeserved e-fame.

Well it's not like I 100% disagree, but I mostly watch the vids for what they are. He still puts a 100% effort into all the episodes and even admit in any episodes that he had 0 history with and are doing it out of fan requests, like with Tomb Raider and the shitty Hydlide sequels. Of course ProJared's review of the Hydlide sequels are better because he actually grew up with them, but he's not as good as faking it as James is and therefore hasn't made a vid of that style in years due to running out of games he grew up with.

But it's like... what'd you expect? James is a massive film buff. All his other videos speak for themselves, and if you want something genuine, you'd watch the vids where he's just talking in a black background. Childhood is limited and it's probably not like James' parents purposely bought him all the bad games they could find

Those vids are some of the best things James has done lol... And a lot of those guys either run their own channels and are James' friends or people who've been working with James for almost since the beginning. I'm pretty sure Justin is one of those people that's been there since very early on.

I was a bit unsure about them early on into video store rental, but they're actually pretty great. That crew reminds me a lot of RedLetterMedia and their re:view series but a lot more produced and with more jokes.

They recently had the Nostalgia Critic and the Cinema Snob cameo on their rental store series. Justin had to spend all video trying to keep Critic back on topic, while Snob had amazing anecdotes about everything

Also there are very few things better than their Mortal Kombat intro

He would just say these like really clever jokes nonchalantly in the middle of his reviews sometimes. And when he's not doing his reviewer persona and just talking about random shit, he would have the craziest stories.
