She had her arms extended and was looking away. That's not a standard cover-up, it's bad defense that beginners in Muay Thay and boxing do. You should not be competing if you're gonna do that. If you can do that, you can guard.

From the sound of it she wouldn't feel this way if he had simply lost, and I don't believe she meant he had to take unnecessary damage to do so. If I was really close to a dude and we trained together and then he did that in a competition, I would be pretty disappointed that he utterly wilted like that. I could still think he's a great guy but I'd be baffled as to why he went through all that sparring only to do that instead of properly defending.
