Why does every little character in Star Wars have some big ass backstory? This is the sacred extended universe people complain about losing?

I think it started from when all they had was 3 movies, and they had to stretch it all into a huge universe of novels. so they started making up backgrounds for every minor person in the trilogy

Every character has to have a badass back story and be connected somehow to the main SW characters. A lot of it sounds like some teenage nerd coming up with the backstory of their RPG character.

The EU had a few good parts, but it was mostly bleh to outright bad.

Even Darth Vader's suit has an intricate and layered backstory.

Checking wookieepedia to read up on minor characters is always fun. Like the guy in the first movie that says to not shoot down the pod containing the droids has an extensive, meaningless backstory.

There's an EU novel that exists to explain why Obi changed his first and not his last name when he went into hiding.

The short of it is he introduced himself just as Ben but this teenage girl had a crush on him and eavesdropped on him forcetalking with Qui-Gon and learned his last name. Luckily, Kenobi is like the Tattooine Smith.
