Lets say you're a typical lotto player and you spend like $10 a week on something, idk, LottoMax or Powerball or them scratchies.

You also know a bunch of other lotto players.

So y'all team up and put your money into a mutual fund...

IDK, I didn't have a point.

It's happened before, both for good and for bad. Do some Googling on it and you'll find a few news stories.

that's like saying people need to stop buying stuff and just put towards there debt. Like if you want to see a movie instead of seeing the movie, take that $12 and spend it on your car payment right now.

Like, not even shitting you, 80% of Americans.

Some people don't seem to understand the concept of not spending money you don't have. I get that medical and education tend to put people in debt, so no judgements there, you gotta take care of your body and try to better yourself, I respect that. But yeah, a lot of dudes out there be buying iPhones every fucking year and getting $30,000 cars.

Oh, right - I didn't mean stuff like mortgages and car loans/college though, those things have upward mobility. I mean debt diving outside that.

Yeah, I don't know the numbers for that. Every year I try to read the annual reports on income and debt just to get a gauge of where I should be to be well ahead of the curve.

A lot of people do that. I get turned away for various things because I don't have credit. Not that I have bad credit, I just don't have credit. I refuse to own a credit card. You own the card but the company owns you.

Well, that is just really fucking stupid. Sorry for being blunt, but it's the truth. You need a credit card. The trick is not to overspend and always pay off the balance every month. You only pay interest if you don't pay it off every month. That's where it gets you since most people overspend and don't pay off the balance every month. As long as you pay it off, then there is nothing wrong with having a credit card. Everyone needs a credit card because you won't have good credit without it. No credit is just as bad as bad credit. You will never be able to take out a mortgage for a house or a big loan for a car or anything like that if you have no credit.

It's not. I do not need a credit card. I already own a home. It's not about overspending, I simply have zero need for one.

I recommend a credit card with rewards programs even if you always pay it off - getting 1% or more off EVERYTHING adds up.

It's was already established (maybe not as well as it could be) that there are certain exclusions to the idea that debt is inherently bad.

Not essential. But very helpful. Emergencies can happen. Even if you have money saved up, it might not be enough depending on what happens. Having a credit card isn't bad because of what it is. I know people who only use it for bills every month, and pay it off with their paycheck right when they get it. That way, it's something they were going to pay for anyway, and they're building up credit. Building up credit is definitely a good thing. Just don't spend what you don't have. And like Lokarin said, get one with a rewards program. It does add up.

Yeah, I typically find that people who are so anti-credit card have actually done no research on the subject and therefore know nothing about how credit and credit cards actually work. Their hate comes purely from ignorance on the subject. (just like most hate I suppose is born from ignorance)

I don't really appreciate your tone. I know how it works, I'm not a moron. Just suffice to say I would never have to work if I didn't want to.
There's never been a reason for me to have one until recently.

Can I ask, then? You mentioned you would never have to work again if you didn't want to? Why is that? Also, what happened recently that has made it so you now have a reason for a credit card?

I live in a home that was left to me in a will, for several years they were busy trying to work everything out because of the way everything was split, but now it's in my name. It was that way for everything, I carried bank cards etc that were not actually mine because I wasn't the primary, I just shared an account. Now I'm on my own insurance, own the house, whatever you get the jist, it's never been necessary for me to do any of those things before. Money came with that, more than enough.
Basically there's a lot of things adults do, that I have zero experience with because it was always done for me or already dealt with. I took care of my grandmother, so she took care of me.
