also nobody is saying that comics are high literature. his whole point is based on that. and it's wrong. we just LIKE comics. it doesn't have to be sophisticated to enjoy it. that's why he is wrong, cause of that misunderstanding. he thinks we think that comics are high art. no. we never claimed that.

Ok. Like I said, I disagree with his opinion, but it wasn't about Stan Lee. People are only mad because they think he attacked a dead man. He didn't. He attacked fans of Stan Lee's. There's a difference.

It's hard for me to get outraged over a dumb blog he probably wrote when stoned, but I do find it a bit ironic. The last time I watched his show he was ranting about excessive late fees on credit cards. I gave up thinking that to him, making a payment on time like a responsible adult is too hard for him. I know he's an admitted socialist to the level of seeing any potential major expense as the government's problem to pay for, not the individual's.

He wonders why kids can't "adult", maybe quit looking at the funny books and maybe look down and ask if promoting an ideal where major if not all of your needs are met for you by someone else has something to do with it.

and considering that there are so many comics that far more sophisticated than superhero stuff out there makes what bill said even dumber

i mean there are literally companies that focus on comics like that:

Fantagraphics
Koyama Press
Pantheon
Top Shelf
Drawn and Quarterly
New York Review Comics

etc etc etc

I mean people spout off on things they know nothing about all the damn time

There are so many people out there who say movie/music these days is bad and yet basically ignore almost the entirety of both of those injuries because they saw a bunch of bad hollywood blockbusters and heard a bunch of top 40 shit.

Which one?

er. I meant C.S Lewis, not dickens. Not sure how I got confused. Bit dickens has plenty of relevant ones as well.

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Lewis' quote is better-known nowadays, but that Dickens quote I found is pretty applicable as well tbh

Definitely. Another good one of his as well

"Most men unconsciously judge the world from themselves, and it will be very generally found that those who sneer habitually at human nature, and affect to despise it, are among its worst and least pleasant samples"

Fits Maher pretty well I'd say.

I think these people have always been around and will always be around. Typical 'things ain't what they used to be and most people are dumb except me' that's always from a perspective of ignorance.

Just rant about mainstream pop culture or younger generations and you'll always have a bunch of mouthbreathers nodding their head in agreement because they'd rather write off things as dumb instead of trying to understand them.

I'm not sure how many people here have heard of Gavin Mcinnes, but a few years ago he made a pretty similar statement in regards to video games and claimed that adults shouldn't be playing them.

Kids like to read books, adults also like to read books. Kids like to watch movies, adults also like to watch movies. Kids like to play video games, adults also like to play video games. Kids like to read comics, adults also like to read comics. It's not rocket science that mediums can appeal to different age demographics. The "I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS SO I DONT LIKE IT" attitude is getting pretty old from these types of people.

Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japans defeat in the Second World War. Japan lost the war to the Americans, he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, theres no reasonable model of what an adult should be like. The theory that Japans defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan. It is also a staple of popular cartoons, many of which feature a well-meaning government that turns out to be a facade concealing sinister and more powerful forces.

Anno pauses for a moment, and gives a dark-browed stare out the window. I dont see any adults here in Japan, he says, with a shrug. The fact that you see salarymen reading manga and pornography on the trains and being unafraid, unashamed or anything, is something you wouldnt have seen 30 years ago, with people who grew up under a different system of government. They would have been far too embarrassed to open a book of cartoons or dirty pictures on a train. But thats what we have now in Japan. We are a country of children.

the creator of Evangelion said this, very similar to Bill's sentiment, and got a lot of shit for it too

they're both fucking right
you can still enjoy your vidya and animu while acknowledging they have good points

Right, its an examination of decadence and the degradation of society. The fact that people took it so personally proves his goddamn point. You can like what you like, that was never the issue.

Maher would have a point if anyone thought mainstream comics and blockbuster movies were a "profound meditiation on the human condition." As is, no one really thinks that. Most people find them to simply be highly entertaining bits of entertainment like we've literally always had, whether they're penny dreadfuls or the television and movie blockbusters we've always had.

That's something he doesn't seem to understand. Comic books and comic book movies have always been around, they were just in the form of something. So while Maher may have grown up and put down the comic book, he was still consuming mindless entertainment in other forms.

Not only is it just in bad taste to try to make this point on top of a man's grave, it just shows a lack of self awareness.
