Which 1st 3d game for its franchise was better

I'm going with ffvii, a game that is arguably better than its snes counterpart while OoT struggles to match lttp

I found oot too cryptic and requiring trial and error for some npc interactions

OoT for sure. VII is really good, don't get me wrong, but OoT's design has held up too well and its game play is a big step up from older 3D games.

FFVII is a much better video game.

But if you're judging it as a 3D game?

The "3D" in FFVII was AWFUL.

They looked like lego bricks for 89% of the game

OoT by a mile.

I didn't like it as much

The forest is fun but after the forest its boring until you turn into an adult

If you didn't do much as a kid you kinda get screwed as an adult

Iirc you need to do some child sidequest to get into the fire temple or something

The GAMEPLAY is amazing but the pacing kinda sucks

Music is great and story is simple but effective

Ffvii however has great gameplay, better pacing, far more interesting story and characters

Nintendo babies just love their nostalgia hence smash bros hype

As the overall package ffvii wins

Mario 64 was more important for 3d gaming than oot

It looks fine even today

So long as you know what you're looking at and its not bothersome you cant complain

What's so bad about it??

When you go into battle you get more realistic models anyway

You know who's who and so on with the overworld graphics

There's nothing wrong with the models, they're stylized

Nintendo fanboys need to wake up

Tough choice for me actually... I'll go with FFVII, because it's a meatier game I think. I also probably prefer RPGs.

Pretty much. It's basically pre-rendered 2D backgrounds overlaid with 3D models. The former actually look OK (because they're pre-rendered). It's the polygons that suck.

My picks:

Most influential game: Final Fantasy 7. While OoT did a LOT for future programmers about simplifying camera controls, combat, the tutorial-model the game follows, and other little design techniques, FF7 was a game changer in the US. I used to get made fun of for liking nerdy things Final Fantasy for the NES and SNES. Now its perfectly acceptable to be into that nerd stuff. I think that's quite a big change. Notice how big an influx of JRPGs, and many more American made RPGs started getting more limelight. Zelda was already established with the mainstream.

Most entertaining: Ocarina of Time. It moves nicely, wonderful to explore, and still very playable.

Best to complete: Ocarina of Time. FF7 towards the end, ugh. And those damn achievements now! OoT's main inconvenience are the plants and the gold skulltulas, but thankfully you are shown where you are missing skulltulas, and are nice to finally figure out where each one is hiding.

Best remaster: Ocarina of Time on portable, mainly solving the big issues that make the N64 version frustrating. the PC port of FF7 is passable, but we'll see how the new FF7 may be if it doesn't stay in production heck forever.

Aged the best: Tie. This is if you had to play each one as their original release. Load times are managable in FF7. OoT's graphics just feel a bit more dull compared to FF7's backdrops, but FF7's blockyness... and I am sorry, the N64 controller. It doesn't feel as good as it did 20 years ago.

You mean some console Gamers hadn't seen anything like it before.

There had been 3D games since the 70s:

And besides I gotta disagree. Good 2D looks much better than Bad 3D.

Bad 3D was a period we had to go through to get to good 3D. But that doesn't make Bad 3D good. It still looks like Lego-Bricks. And not only that the animiation during the lego-brick parts was awful.

FFVII looks terrible and I say that as a fan of the game. Anyone who doesn't admit it looks like shit for at least the lego-sections is either a fanboy or riddled with nostaglia.

It doesn't even have good art-design like Spyro or FFIX or other good PS1 3D games. Everything is just smushed together with awkward polygons in weird shapes and colors that clash with the backgrounds.

FF7 has aged the worst of the two by far and it has very little to do with the graphics.

OoT is still a good game even if it's not the greatest of all time anymore.
