A big ass asteroid is on a collision course with earth and could be the end of the world as we know it

With our current tech, how can we feasibly deal with it? Giant ass laser? Bruce Willis? Ive heard of nuking it but uh...what if the nuke misses? Lol

Also, would it be a big enough catastrophic event to harbor a global temporary peace? Or would it just create mass panic, looting, etc?

When I was a kid I remember a retro PC game where you collect wrenches and build a slingshot to deflect a meteor from hitting the Earth

This topic reminded of that game and I can't remember what it was called, it's driving me mad

Yes! If every male on earth deeded into the atmosphere towards the asteroid, we found either change its course or destroy it entirely!

But honestly, we'd be pretty fucked. There are lasers we could currently build that would likely deflect it, but we don't have the infrastructure up there to get it done in a hurry.
Nuclear weapons and similar would have more of a chance of fragmenting it then they do of deflecting. Now we have ten six mile fragments hitting the earth instead of one really big one. We'd still be fucked.

So why don't we build the infrastructure now just in case so we are prepared if it happens?

Last I heard of the NASA plan was a few years ago, but we would probably know the asteroid is coming years or decades in advance. The plan would then be to send a big satellite out to sit next to the asteroid for years, slowly altering the path via gravitational pull between the asteroid and satellite. Altering the path by just a tiny fraction of a degree when it is travelling that huge distance would cause it to miss.

That's pretty fucking cool

My fantasy plan would be to install huge ass turbines at major points around the earth and use them to spin the earth around it's solar orbit faster so the asteroid would miss

But there's probably a million things wrong with that plan lmao

This. But in a short term emergency the best course would be successive nuking. Blast it apart and keep blasting each fragment until theyre small enough to uust burn in the atmosphere.

May end up irradiating most of the planet but that can be dealt with somewhat. Cant really recover if an Armageddon type asteroid is 18 days away.

But the order of the universe is that asteroids destroy life and the Earth will spring forth a new dominating species.

I don't think it's morally responsible to nature to interrupt the course of life. If an asteroid is headed directly for Earth then it is simply the end of our time.

Nature gave us the ability to stop asteroids. I say that means nature wants us to survive an asteroid

Human beings are a cancer on the Earth. We probably deserve a mass extinction honestly. Look at the United States of America today and tell me that's not at least somewhat true.

I think we will ultimately destroy ourselves before a natural extinction event occurs anyway. We are eventually going to start running out of food, water, and natural resources.

Do you think that China, Russia, and the United State are just going to sit idly and share those resources?

yeah but the thing is, there would never be a "short term emergency" scenario in the case of an asteroid impact on earth. it would never get down to such a ridiculously small timeframe as only 18 days until impact. we have the methods of observing spacetime out for almost unimaginable distances, and the astrophysical math and science to figure out the trajectories of pretty much any object we see, all the way backward and forward in time in the object's observable lifespan.

Man. What a time to live in.

I always theorized that if something like the size of a planet was coming at us and we had no chance, NASA would keep it secret for decades to keep from causing mass panic, and the public would only find out with a couple week notice that the world was ending
