Sometimes shit happens. With modern consoles, if the power is cut off while the game auto saves... what will happen to the save file, game and console?

There is a chance your save file will get corrupt. If you are that worried, get a UPS.

But nothing happens to the game itself or the console? Like will it affect the ability to save games in the future? That's what I worry about.

Just corrupt your save file. If you're lucky some games will keep a copy of a previous save and refer back to an earlier save. Otherwise you'll lose your save completely.

Like if a game has 3 save files, one of them gets corrupted but the other 2 are fine and ready to go? Or is the ability to save corrupted in its entirety?

Oh that's not as worrisome then, just inconvenient. If God forbid something happens to a console's power outlet while the game is saving I can work around that.

casualty of a corrupt save due to power outage:
Lego Star Wars 3 (wii). i was on the final boss too but i didn't collect everything in the game :(.

Oh you know what fucked my pokemon gold and silver and crystal carts, the fact that the battery save file ran out so it erased all my saves. Apparently the saves where tied to the battery life or something like that?

most games these days every save file is actually two files, the save file and a backup of it. in the event that your file can't be loaded, it will attempt to load the backup and overwrite the corrupt save file with the backup.

I'd be more worried about hardware damage than I would be for the save game.
