Wow, skills A, B, C and D are cool and amazing. Skills W, X, Y, and Z are clearly awful and pointless.

*reads build guides*

You must use W, X, Y and Z as your primary build if you want to get anywhere. Do not use A, B, C and D. They are useless.

I suck at ARPGs.

They always use the lame ass skills that make you move slightly faster or buff some random attribute you were 90% sure you've never actually used before.

Something like "Swift Charge will make your character move 1.23% faster when debuffed but only on a full moon on a Tuesday".

Message boards: "Swift Charge is seriously OP"

Meanwhile "Apocalypse Death Volcano will grant your character 300% damage increase for 60 seconds against all enemies" is apparently no good.

I can usually recognize the good and bad spells but the good spells end up boring a lot of the time and the bad spells are actually really fun and cool. Like "Magic Weapon grants 25% increased damage as long as it is active" would be good but "Lightning Meteor deals 300% damage in a massive aoe and looks cool as shit." would be bad. That seems to happen in a lot of games.

ARPG Veteran: "SC is OP because mac com debuff stacks 1.23x for every integer of crit for 2 sec but additional multiplicative ret con SPRT. Just make sure your gear is specced up with xrek prs qc otherwise it adds damage before the crit bonus has a change to stack after the buff"

Yeah, I gave up trying to read shit on the Diablo board because of this. I didn't want to have to learn another language to read about builds.

This is why I avoided a lot of RPGs for a long time - especially before designers figured out that the option to be able to re-spec is a good thing. Imagine doing a spec you think sounds cool and then it sucks and then you can't redo it without replaying the game.

Yeah thats awful. I quite like when games give you a sandbox mode where you can play around with different styles without it costing a fortune too.

My situation's usually more 'oh, you decided to help that villager escape the castle? Well turns out neglecting them is the only way to get that high powered weapon / ability.'

But I can also sympathize with TC. Mine's been more the opposite lately. I had to abandon my first Morrowind playthru because I erroneously took the Atronach sign based on a build guide. I've played countless hours of Oblivion / Skyrim, I knew exactly what Atronach would do, and yet I still let myself get talked into using it.

End-game stat jockeys sometimes forget that spending 200 hours in misery in order to be OP later on is actually boring for normal people

I got this 2H mace that adds a crapload of lightning damage and a AOE lightning shield thing, and I've been running around, shooting a couple lightning hammers, and watching as literally everyone onscreen dies instantly.

No need to have optimal stats and setups. At that point, other people are virtually playing the game for me.

Especially for Diablo I agree. Almost none of the wizard meta builds appeal to me so I just play with skills I like.

Extracted the lightning power 2H and now I have it regardless of the weapon I'm using. It's so broken, I jumped from Torment I to Torment V easily.

It's substantially less painful if you can respec, but that's a big if.

I remember, in earlier Diablo games, intentionally holding skill points because i didn't want to use them upgrading a skill that would become worthless late-game. Playing with a tree of one-point skills was painful until you got to the ones you wanted and were levelled enough to spend the backlog.
