So I'm a cashier at panera bread as some of you know (don't job shame me, lol) and I had this customer and she ordered something that cost $3.04

So she had three dollars and three cents and asked if I could spot her the penny and I told her it was against store policy for me to do so.

She preceded to give me four dollars and asked for a receipt that I happily gave her and she was like "YEAH I WANT THE RECEIPT SO I CAN FILL OUT A SURVEY ABOUT YOU!!!! >:("

I was like "lol okay whatever lady" and gave her the item she ordered (a piece of crum cake, these are VERY good btw I highly suggest you ordering this next time you are at panera bread"

I told my manager later and she laughed her ass off. Best part is our receipts don't have surveys on them because this isn't a fucking grocery store and she was basically just mad at me that I didn't give her free food.

what a bitch.

It's weird how some people reach adulthood without ever realizing the world doesn't have to give them everything they want just because they want it.

Had a woman a month back who wanted to return something well out of the 30-day window to get it back on her card, and absolutely would not accept store credit. She took it eventually, then headed into the store to find something that costs as much as her credit. Comes back a minute later, I say "That was quick," and she replies, "Well, I'm just buying this to return it and get my money back" with a big smile. That smile died when I flatly told her, "That's not how this is gonna work out."

If I gave a penny to every customer who's short on change.. And heck, in this story she had the money, just not the exact change, it's not like it was all the money she had.

I understand TC, a penny is nothing and the customer could have just walked outside and grab one from the floor or could you just have said w/e and pay it for them

However if this happens once, then everyone will just expect the same (racism, sexisms, favoritism, etc) and then you end up with a big problem for just one penny.

Most rational people understand that it should not be expected at all. A much smaller number are total shits about it. Like the lady in this story. She had more then enough but didn't want to break a dollar.

nah, that would not be a problem at all. if so, every places would be having these kind of problems now since i have seen quite a lot of places do this as someone mentioned before most stores would not care that much if you are not more than fifty cents owe of that price.

Sure, caring that much about a penny is silly, but here are the two players here:
1. Cashier whose register will be counted at the end of the night, and any discrepancy is gonna get noticed. ("You only get a talking to at X dollars" isn't the same as "They literally don't take note of your till being off if it's under X dollars," to think otherwise is stupid.)

2. A woman who literally HAS enough money to pay for it in cash, but doesn't want to break an extra dollar, and is so angered by this offense that they claim they're gonna complain about it.

The only reason to think the cashier is in the wrong is if you're the woman who got butthurt over a penny. Anyone else arguing it is bait.

Why is it other peoples' job to pay for your purchase?

This logic is insane. Nevermind a cashier being asked this is literally being asked to steal from their employer.

If you have ever asked a cashier to "spot" you, you are human trash. No matter if its a penny or fifty dollats.

Yes. If it was a mom and pop store i can see it sliding here and there but corporate or franchise stores don't want you to get into that habit because millions of people doing that across the nation everyday adds up. To avoid that you gotta be consistent with every customer, even if it seems as trivial as a penny.
