Our cable boxes just had a new update so they have me covering the influx of cable calls since the internet/phone queues aren't so bad, and it's mostly just helping old people navigate through the menus.

This older lady literally just started crying over having to learn slightly different menus. Like flat out ugly cry sounding crying. It was awkward.

it's difficult to comprehend how older people have so much trouble with new technology and changes. it becomes especially obvious when they have to stop and write down the steps to open a browser and bookmark a web page or something similar. i guess i hope i can avoid the same demise given that i've grown up in an age with breakneck technological improvements and have become accustomed to the need for constant relearning/retraining.

What kind of job do you work? I always assumed you had a "respectable" job, like many people on CE.

I work ISP troubleshooting/helpdesk. If you don't think that's a 'respectable' job then oh well. I do well for myself here. =p

Eh, I think a lot of people look down on call center work but I respect anyone actually going and earning a living - it's the people who think some types of work are "beneath them" that I can't stand. I'm fortunate to have a good career in accounting but if I lost that and had to put food on the table with retail or whatever then I would.

Help desk isn't a bad job if you aren't being screamed at to meet targets
And depending you can get upwards of 20ish an hour

On the other hand, TC is doing it for an ISP
so

It happens to everyone

it's because tech is becoming easier and easier to use
And that is going to cause a massive amount of people not know how to troubleshoot and just have more and more people like error here (local best buy tv repair man apparently) getting paid more and more while fenderbender (local best buy tv shopper apparently) having to waste money to get help

I keep wondering at what point we're going to reach a data cap but to my amazement the resolutions keep going up.

I mean 4k is literally 8 million pixels. If we're going 60 FPS, 24bit (in fairness, I don't know if they do 24bit), that's about 12Gbit/s and evidently it still works over HDMI o_O

I can see how old people miss the analog days. Push the power button and instantaneously the TV is on. Then from there it's just channel up and channel down. Bam.

Can't most people still order and use basic cable?

Older Lady Customer: I can't login to Facebook. Three days ago there was a tech down the street visiting my neighbor, do you think that's related?

She then just threatened to cancel her internet service with us if we can't reset her Facebook password. lol

lol, nah, this shit's legit.

She's now reading random names of friends she has and asking me about it even though I've told her like 5-6 times we have no control over Facebook.

She then told me to disconnect her internet because she's tired of paying for a service that isn't working. Let her know she's not paying us or anyone for a Facebook account, and that her internet service IS working. Let her know that disconnecting our service will not disconnect or close her Facebook account.

She is persistent on turning off our service though.

I tried to explain to it as 'we essentially manage the roads to get you to different buildings, we do not control what these buildings are or what happens inside of them'.

That didn't work either.

Then she talks about how she's 'not stupid' and joked that no one will take advantage of her.

I just said okay and transferred her over. lol

I put out the money last month to get my dad a Roku Express and Sling TV account (we haven't had cable in a while) and by the next day he was complaining he couldn't flip up and down through the channels.
