If they show him (or other heroes) rescuing anyone, then people are going to feel it takes away from the actual first responders. And then there's the question of why some of the more powerful heroes didn't stop the planes or prevent the buildings from falling. Or why someone with psychic powers (or even an intelligence agency like SHIELD) didn't prevent the whole thing.
