That's a solid headlock of that thief. But is it allowed by the law?

Anyone can arrest or restrain somebody.

But you better be fucking SURE, though. If you do either of those wrongfully, you're in some serious shit.

Did anyone else laugh at the end when he attempted to scream like a little pussy. Bullys, thieves, criminals, they all exhibit that same mindset. Make yourself the victim, youre never doing anything wrong. Its always someone else making you upset, causing you harm, etc. The government is screwing me, then its my family, oh but my girl dawg. Fucking pussies.

If you have the probable cause you can citizen's arrest them. Otherwise it would be false imprisonment.

let them get away

the corporation doesn't lose anything and you don't have to explain to the law why you shouldn't do jail time.

I recall an incident where i, along with a small group of other people, did see a worker catch a shoplifter.

IIRC, he was let go, because the worker restrained him for more than 5 minutes without trying to let go and see if he would run.

I dont agree with that ruling though... it was clear he wanted to leave, you could hear it.

If they hate your haircut, you're unemployed.

If you work at McDs you need to hide your tats. And shave.

Obviously but I don't know why the deflection.
You have free speech but they're fire you for saying certain stuff too. Duh? What does this add at all to the scenario?
Also, there are plenty of loss prevention security workers that can/do use force, each company has its own policy.

edit, I'm answering the OP, "is this allowed by law" not "does company x allow it"

bla bla bla deflection.

You aren't even paid enough to stop them. They may even kill you.

What none of you are talking about is that these are mall security guards. It is their job to do this.

This specific situation it seems like it was at a mall of some sort based on the lay out and there were security guards who were on the scene as well, and the dude tried to run out of the store triggering the alarms. So yes, this would be perfectly fair. If he had been by himself and the man had the merchandise and you think he's trying to steal it but hadn't attempted to flee yet and was still in the store then no, you can't.

Across the several retail jobs I worked back in the day, every single one says you should tell people to stop and alert security/"loss prevention" but under no circumstances should you ever touch or pursue people.

Some places dont even want you to alert security or say a word until they are gone. Let the cameras do the work for you

Varies between jurisdictions. Here, they're allowed to restrain someone to prevent them shoplifting, but not simply to catch someone who's shoplifted in the past (but isn't currently doing so).

Which is dumb because police won't do anything with it other than take a report. Such a waste to throw man hours at less than $950.00 worth of stuff.
