There's no way they put a day couple into a children's show 30 (or however many) years ago. This is coming out now because its stylish to have underrepresented groups in shows.

So the creator came out and said they were based off of his own gay relationship, but I'm pretty sure the intent is to just leave things unsaid. They aren't canonically either.

I don't get why grown people give a damn about the sexuality of muppets in a show for preschool age children. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people?

I don't know if this is where it started exactly but what happened was that one of the writers (in an interview with a queer blog) said he modeled Bert and Ernie after his own relationship:

I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked are Bert & Ernie lovers? And that, coming from a preschooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didnt have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie & I as Bert & Ernie.
