It has a few good levels (which are all at the beginning of the game), a bunch of OK levels, and some bad levels. But no levels that are great. Compared to Banjo Kazooie the levels in SM64 are trash.

I would still call it a great game though which is weird

I know what you mean but all platformers have levels that are great and some that arent. As for SM64 I never cared for Hazy Maze Cave and the Haunted Mansion. The rest are good to great.

As the game went on my feeling in 1996 was they got lazy and less inspired. The level with the clocks and the level with the changing water levels were chores and not fun like the lava, bombom field and snow level were the best.

In previous Mario games it didn't matter if there were a few bad levels because there were so many of them. Before SM64 Mario games were never known for their individual levels but they had to be in SM64... and the devs clearly failed at making them great.

Could one of the reasons the levels are so bad is because you have to do all of them multiple times to get all the different stars and such? Going through the same level over and over would be tedious and boring, I would think.

This. There was nothing like SM64 at the time, of course later games had better stages

IMO Tiny-Huge Island is the only one that really REALLY sucks. Hate that fucking level.

Yeah. It's easy to say in retrospect "Hey, this game wasn't that great."

At the time literally everyone was jizzing their pants over it, there was nothing like it before and really nothing to compete with it.

But at least its a nice outdoor level with nice visuals.

It's absolutely no better than Bob-Bomb Battlefield or Tall Tall Mountain, and the tiny island is WAY too easy to fall off of, and the huge island takes forever to get anywhere
