Paternity leave is a joke concept here.

Maternity leave is rare itself and often short changed.

So, even breathing the words paternity leave will get you laughed out of most work places.

We just have parental leave in canada. We have 12 months that you can split any way you want. The mother can have all 12 months, or she can take 9 and the father can take 3, whatever!

I wanted to take a month or two, but realised pretty quickly that taking care of a newborn is hard work so I just went to work and she took the whole 12 months.

The concept of "leave" and "time off" in general is super foreign to USA people.

Yet, they don't seem to notice when their bosses and the like take a shit ton of time off.

I don't live in America and I never will because of stuff like this.

https://20somethingfinance.com/american-hours-worked-productivity-vacation/
The U.S. is the ONLY country in the Americas without a national paid parental leave benefit. The average is over 12 weeks of paid leave anywhere other than Europe and over 20 weeks in Europe.
Zero industrialized nations are without a mandatory option for new parents to take parental leave. That is, except for the United States.
American Average Work Hours:
At least 134 countries have laws setting the maximum length of the work week; the U.S. does not.
In the U.S., 85.8 percent of males and 66.5 percent of females work more than 40 hours per week.
According to the ILO, Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers.
Using data by the U.S. BLS, the average productivity per American worker has increased 400% since 1950. One way to look at that is that it should only take one-quarter the work hours, or 11 hours per week, to afford the same standard of living as a worker in 1950 (or our standard of living should be 4 times higher). Is that the case? Obviously not. Someone is profiting, its just not the average American worker.
There is not a federal law requiring paid sick days in the United States.
The U.S. remains the only industrialized country in the world that has no legally mandated annual leave.
In every country included except Canada and Japan (and the U.S., which averages 13 days/per year), workers get at least 20 paid vacation days. In France and Finland, they get 30 an entire month off, paid, every year.

No thanks

IIRC, there are zero laws requiring a minimum pto. PTO is literally left to the generosity of the employer.

Hell, I was on Hulu the other day and there was an ad a company put out that they were letting their workers a chance to win a single paid day off. I don't remember which and would have to go Google it.

Edit: if there are laws on the books I'd like to see it.

Everybody in Australia does this. And we get 4 weeks paid vacation a year, plus 10 days sick pay on top of this (not included in the 4 weeks) and an additional 9.5% salary paid into our superannuation (401k) account.

Nothing in america. PTO, maternity / paternity leave, holidays--all of those things are concepts that unions managed to negotiate for us. The government did nothing except put some heavy limitations on child labor and increased liability for workplace injuries.

1) Nor should they. I don't like the idea of mandatory holidays.
2) If you want these kinds of benefits work for a unionized position and join the union.

The problems with unions are that you pay dues and if they decide to strike, they do very little to take care of you while they try to work a deal out with the employer.

We also know employers became so tired of unions that they fled the country and sold our jobs overseas. Then they compounded anti-union messages throughout the working world.

Best thing we could do is start throwing these laws on the books since employers have proven they have no loyalty to our people.
