Black Bears are a protected species in many areas. If they are crowding an area it's probably because they are being chased out of their natural habitats thanks to logging. Not that you seem to give a shit about ethics.

Yea, you're "probably" reasoning isn't going to hold much ground without any sources. Lets say it did though. California still has over 25,000 black bears and they have been a problem for years. They're not a protected species. The population would still have to be taken care of and hunting would still have to take place

Ethics have nothing to do with this topic so there's no need for you to cry over that

Just saying, Cali could relocate them instead.

How?

The time and manpower it would take to do something like that would cost millions. Hunting actually brings in money to the economy and gets the same result

What you're proposing is a nearly impossible task. They already cap the amount of bears killed a year to around 1700 or so. You can't just kill as many as you want

Yeah but the larger issue here is that bears have a pretty limited habitat and its constantly being destroyed in America. I'm really not saying it's a "simple" fix. But I really don't feel like hunting bears will help the problem at all. I mean you'll just end up with the most dangerous bears that have survived being hunted raiding homes. I don't see how that's better. Legislation on forests has sucked for a while though across the nation.

Well as far as deforestation goes then I agree we need to slow down how much we're removing. As a hunter (or outdoorsman in general) it makes me sick when I see a the constant teardown of our forests or land in general. It even happened to me a few years ago. A company came in and took out acres of trees from the land I hunt for the wood, and I'm just left with nothing.

That being said hunting of these bears (or any legal animal) shouldn't be taken off the table either. I won't get into all the pros of hunting, but it would be pretty devastating to take that away (thankfully that will never happen though)

Not sure if you realize that a bullet travels far faster than an arrow, therefore the force it hits with is still more than an arrow even though it has less mass.

It's more challenging. It's quiet. You get more meat. Easier to field dress.

Somehow it's also a lot more expensive.

It has its ups and downs. I would still never go hunting without a large sidearm to use for emergencies like, for example, a black bear tries to maul me to death.

Wrong.

State wildlife agencies purposefully cause deer overpopulation so hunters have plenty of deer to hunt. They screw up the ecosystem and the ratio of bucks to does. Hunters are bad for nature.

This is another example of shitty legislation. By nature hunting does keep a natural balance to the ecosystem.

Maybe through the skin, but muscle and tissue is dense and bullets travel at an incredibly higher velocity. I'm actually curious now, as bows do leave bigger entry wounds, but I've never heard of an arrow traveling completely through an animal/human (unlike bullets, where even smaller calibers can pierce through). I'd think that the increased mass would cause it to stop much quicker.

Absolutely, but the one defining feature of a bear is that it's a tank, regardless of species.

YukihoHagiwara posted...

People can tank an arrow to the face too provided it hits right, like right between the eyes in certain spots.

Yeah, but I'd say that bears have a significant higher probability of survival against firearms and bows in most cases. What you are describing is like a fluke shot.

Momentum is mass times velocity, while the penetrating power is based on momentum divided by surface area.
An arrowhead as vastly less surface area than a bullet, especially the pointy-bit that goes in first.

I don't get something.

Sure, bears are a lot of fur, fat and muscle. But isn't a cut a cut? There's skin, pain, nerves, etc. Wouldn't taking a bullet take them down? Think what happens when a human gets a knife slash that doesn't cut any muscle... it's still very painful

Some bears have the ability to tolerate large amounts of pain. I believe its a survival instinct, a bear that is mortally wounded will still chase down its prey even if it's inches away from dying...

Every comparison video I've seen is metal/armor or something similar and the arrow penetrates fully while bullets often get stopped. I assume the metal is thicker than our muscles/tissue.

Some can. Black bears are on the smaller side for bears, but the bigger ones can lift like a ton and are impervious to some firearms. Between the fat and fur, they are basically wearing kevlar. Other species of bears can definitely take on smaller guns. I remember a story about a polar bear that killed like two people and survived an entire clip of 9mm fire and some rifle rounds, before finally being put down with a 45 revolver to the brain.
