My friend has been bugging me about it for a while. Like two years.

I finally broke down and tried out the free weekend. Played some games against AI on easy just to get a feel. I kinda dig it...just curious what the most helpful newbie advice is that you have. Pretending that I'm perfect at basic FPS mechanics.

What's your best "git gud quick" advice?

Learn to play a variety of characters and know which ones will best counter the opposing team.

You should try playing some Mystery Heroes in the arcade. It's a good way to experience the different characters without people getting all mad at you for being bad.

Stick with your team. The biggest mistake new players make is to charge in on their own and get slaughtered in unbalanced fights (unless you're godlike, you're not likely to win the 1v6/4/3match up). This is especially important after you die, since a common mistake is to rush back to the fight instead of regrouping with your team. It's important to recognize when a team fight is lost and when you need to reset before trying again.

This.

My wife is a huge overwatch fan and has played since day 1. She can easily main half the characters in the game. When she finally convinced me to seriously play I got great at 2 characters but that way my downfall. Try and find at least a 2 in all 3 classes you like the playstyle of so you can switch on the fly.

My wife Mains D.va or Orisa if she has a choice. I like Hanzo & Pharah.

Play what makes you uncomfortable its the best way to improve.

It's cool to have a favorite character but you need to learn how to use all the classes. I hope I'm not trying to sound too bitter here but people online are morons and never agree to a good setup so you have to fill in for them.

You need a balanced team and the most popular one is 222 , two DPS two healers and two tanks

Nah family let's just be a team of 6 tanks and wonder why we lose every match

Learn to use at least 2 of the tanks and healers because almost everybody instant locks DPS roles. Its best to just get the hang of most characters in something like Mystery Heroes where nobody will get upset if you lose. DPS wise Hanzo is the strongest right now. Pharah can be good because people have trouble aiming at her. 76 is like the easiest hero to pick us DPS wise because he plays like a standard FPS protagonist. There are all sorts of things to learn about each character really so knowing when to do something or when not to do something helps a lot.

Some characters have like ULTRA hard counters so its good to know them since you might need to switch. A good example of this is Bastion vs Winston. 1v1 a Bastion never loses that matchup. If your team cant shut down the Bastion youre better off switching to a different tank because otherwise hes just gonna melt Winston the whole match.

Stay on the objective. It doesn't matter how many kills you get if you leave the objective and the opponent wins the match.

This one's a bit of a rare instance but if you're the only one alive and y'all are about to lose, jump on the point and hold out as long as you can so your teammates have a bit more time to run back. Sacrifice your body and go down fighting

I've lost a matches where one or two guys were afraid to jump in against 2-5 guys during the final countdown and we lost anyways. And on the flip side there's been a few times where I was mei or something and I managed to hold out long enough for the Calvary to arrive and we won

PC is obviously the better way to go mechanically, but on PS4 you don't have worry about the awful horrible disgusting toxic community spouting racial slurs in chat.

So.

Up to you.

Yeah, even when things look bad, never give up. It's easy to get demoralized and just assume you've lost the game, but I had plenty of matches where my team got stomped throughout the entire game, without even getting one inch of progress on the objective, but with a last second rally in overtime we were able to take the point and use the momentum to ultimately win the match. That said, I've also been on the opposite side of that scenario too...

But point being, never give up.

If you want to be the fall guy for any game you lose no matter how well you might play definitely pick Hanzo. Damn shame too because Hanzo can be fun.

No matter how good you are, you will lose half of your games.

Some weeks you will lose 90% of your games. I had a week like that last month.

Some days you will lose all your games.

My most important advice for Overwatch is, make sure you're having a good time when you're not winning, otherwise the game will just make you depressed.

To do this, focus on enjoying the learning and analyzing, more than the joy of winning.

(A corollary is, no matter how good you are, your team will get mad at you sometimes. Watch any stream, gold or GM, everyone in chat is yelling at each other. Don't take it personally or very seriously. Everyone makes mistakes, some people are quicker to throw blame.)

Also, watch streams.

Hanzo is so good right now that a lot of matches do come out to the winner having the better Hanzo/Widow (mostly on PC, but can apply to console as well).

Oh yeah dont be afraid to switch. A lot of people never do or wait way too long to switch. There are some characters Id probably recommend not playing, but like all the characters are usable. Some are just way harder to get mileage out of. Like Ana is a perfectly fine healer, but a lot of people prefer Moira or Mercy because they dont need accuracy to heal

If you're already good at FPS in general then definitely try a bunch of characters.

For this game in particular you should practice getting headshots because it is THE difference between killing and dying in fights. The headshot hitboxes are wildly different and different guns deal with them differently (many of which can't headshot at all).

The most important thing is that it's mechanically more like a team MOBA than it is an online arena FPS. Play characters that you are strong with and communicate with your team.
