Nah.

Conservatives just don't have Trump derangement syndrome nor are we infected with the liberal pathogen so we can recognize and acknowledge when someone we usually disagree with has a moment of clarity.

Lol, the right wing projection on this guy.

Either theyre a platform which allows people to express themselves. Or theyre a publisher that picks and dictates what is released. If theyre the latter then they are subjected to legal liability that their users post.

Theyve been skirting the line between the two and reaping the benefits of both without bearing the consequences of either..

New York times vs Sullivan

Explain why you think that matters and not just a shitty talking point you stole from someone else

Ill break down the rule of law for this case:

If a plaintiff is a public official or is running for public office, he or she can recover damages for defamation only by proving with clear and convincing evidence the falsity of the defamatory statements and the presence of actual malice in the speaker.

But Im not sure how that is being applied here.

You're heading towards another false equivalence. You're trying to equate monopolistic company acquisitions with a company acquiring other companies that serve different purposes.

What you're referring to is stuff like AT&T having a monopoly back in the day and being forced to break up because people didn't have other options for phone service.

Google buying Youtube didn't cause anyone to not have another option for video hosting and/or live streaming.

Amazon buying Twitch didn't cause anyone to not have another option for video hosting and/or livestreaming.

Facebook only controls its own social media platform.

Twitter only controls its own social media platform.

Spotify only controls its own streaming platform.

Vimeo only controls its own streaming platform.

Myspace only controls its own social media platform. This used to be the most popular option until Facebook opened up their access to more people and became the most popular option.

Google only controls the entities it owns and its own platforms.
- Examples: Google search, Youtube, Google Maps, Google Fiber, etc.

A phone company buying up all of the companies that offer phone service in the area causes people to only be able to buy phone service from one company.

I suppose my issue is more of what the casual person gets to see. Like, how a casual person might think CNN is unbiased.

Just like a casual person would think "ah, google search: They're not restricting my results at all!"

But yeah - we shall see what the future holds, here. My thing is that I don't like a small handful of companies being in control of everything.

Break the rules lose acess to the platform. You can still make your own platform on the internet to share your thoughts. Alex hasn't lost his infowars site.

"What the casual person thinks" isn't what defines what a monopoly is, so that's not really relevant. "What the casual person is actually able to do" would be more relevant.

There is not a monopoly here. All competing platforms independently came to the same conclusion overnight that suddenly, after many years of spewing crazy ToS breaking shit, Alex Jones was breaking terms of service. Don't like it? You're free to use Baidu instead. There's healthy competition in this space for sure.

As someone that believes Jones should've collected harsh ToS strikes years ago, I wonder what the tipping point was. They were fine with him doxing Sandy Hook parents. I'm more concerned with the platforms subtly tweaking monetization and algorithms more in favor of big corporate channels every day. It's not how these platforms started or why they got popular.

And the right to free thought includes telling nutcases to fuck off and not associating with them. Otherwise, it's not free thought, just free to spew crazy bullshit without opposition.

"Wrongthink" exists every day in every social interaction. It's only scary if the government starts defining it.

This is very tricky. I dont know if Alex Jones should be immune to the TOS like many conservatives are suggesting. Imagine if Trump gets banned off twitter for violating the terms of service. Should he be immune as well?

At the same time, these are big platforms that hold enormous leverage. Especially with the youth because Fox News and CNN is for old people.

If you are a liberal, you would support free speech no matter what. Oh how the tables have turned. Fake liberals everywhere.

Banning the entire Alex Jones network is a stretch. banning his more inflammatory videos would've been fair instead of purging him completely.

Speaking of Trump and Twitter...

Donald Trump cannot block anyone on Twitter, court rules
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/may/23/trump-twitter-block-ruling-court-public-forum-account

A district court in New York has ruled that Donald Trump cannot block people on Twitter, because it violates their first amendment rights to participate in a public forum.

The case was brought forward by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, representing seven plaintiffs who have been blocked by the president.

In ruling against Trump, the court pointed to past White House assurances that the presidents Twitter account is an official political channel. In her 75-page opinion, the United States district judge Naomi Reice Buchwald wrote: The president presents the @realDonaldTrump account as being a presidential account as opposed to a personal account and, more importantly, uses the account to take actions that can be taken only by the president as president.

Earlier this week Trump attempted to order a DoJ investigation into election surveillance with a tweet that began I hereby demand.

Judge Buchwald suggested that Trump could have simply ignored the replies that upset him, rather than blocking the users involved.

you don't hit the best targets you hit the targets you can take

You don't start an invasion of the US by sending footsoliders to Washington.

If this is solely about Alex Jones why are people who ate merely talking about him getting punished also?

Hilarious example: H3H3's Ethan got a stream taken down and a strike against his channel for talking about Alex Jones.... in a live stream where he was passionately defending YouTube's actions

Meanwhile Logan Paul does worse than Jones ever did and no one cares

This is undeniably a political move based on what money social media sites can make. it has nothing to do with terms of service

Yeah I'd say Trump out himself in that situation. Though I'd argue the Supreme Court can't call Twitter a government platform by any stretch of the imagination as well. I suppose it was Trump that did that, but either way.
