because I'm Catholic.

If we believe that Jesus established the one and only church (the apostolic church) and we believe that we are the continuation of the original church... how are people going to say we aren't Christian?

Yeah, I've had multiple people argue with me that they are different things. I also had one guy say that he was 'Christian'. I asked what church he went to and he told me, "It's just called Christianity". But yeah, Catholicism is 100% a Christian group; all Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholics.

I'm a Catholic. And yes, I've encountered the same damn thing.
Try not to let it bother you. They're idiots and they don't know what they're talking about despite how convinced they may be that they do.
Same thing from the same types that argue about catholics worshiping false idols because we have saints.
You can't argue with stupid and it's exhausting to even try.

I think it's more that a lot of apologists want to use it as some sort of No True Scotsman fallacy.

The veneration of Saints [to the extent within Catholicism], elevation of Mary and the pomp and circumstance don't help.

Orthodox Icons don't get the same level of scrutiny compared to if Catholics do something similar.

Double standards.

Vatican II really didn't help either.

I've got to admit though, Sola Fide is a cop out.

Keep your faith and that's the best you can really do.

While those things can be considered problems, it's not like all the other branches don't have similar theological issues. The reality is that they are Christians, in fact, they are arguably the first Christians (depending on where you separate them from the Eastern Orthodox Church). Saying, 'they aren't Christians' is a really lazy No True Scotsman.

Dude I got the fucking opposite reaction. Some chick I was talking to was talking about mass and what not, and I was like "oh you're Christian".

She said no. She's Catholic.

I'm like isn't it the same thing? Like Catholic is a subset of Christianity.

She insisted I was wrong, and I dropped it cause I figured I might be mansplaining. Glad to know I wasn't

Considering the history of the Popes and Jesus's teachings . . . how anyone could be a Catholic is beyond me. Obviously it's indoctrination but still.

Yes, with the caveat that the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church used to be the same organization before they split, meaning that both organizations were the 'first' Christians.

The only thing that makes you a Christian is believing in Jesus -- and not just saying you believe in him (mouthing the words is easy), but proving it by actually living your life and treating others the way he told you to. (That's the part that's too tough for a lot of "Christians".) No other test is necessary.

Saying you believe in/follow Jesus is enough to be a Christian. Doesn't necessarily mean you're a good Christian but you're still a Christian.

There's definitely a case against Catholicism being legitimate Christianity when coming from other Christians, but it is objectively a Christian sect from an outsider's perspective. Those are all arguments with a certain, narrower context.

However I find it ironic when Catholics are far more involved in the religion than many "Christians" who just follow the religion insofar as believing in God and the mythos and accepting Jesus and maybe knowing the gist of like Noah's ark.
