I spent a summer in Northern Florida and every time I asked for a coke they'd ask 'what kind'

It was rly annoying so I just started drinking a lot of Dr pepper

i think it might be a georgia thing? my uncle and cousins from there used to call all soda coke and theyre from there.

ive lived all across tennessee from memphis to knoxville tho and we do not do that.

they didnt do it when i lived in florida either.

In New Zealand no one ever uses the word 'soda', usually a coke will mean coca-cola, but if that's not available than it can also mean pepsi. We also use the words 'fizzy drink' a lot.

I live in Georgia and have literally never heard people call soda in general coke.

Bonus points in that I live and work in two separate counties that have 80-100% for calling all soda Coke on that map... <_<

Thats wrong, Coke is just short for Coca Cola. The name of the actual drink is Cola. Pepsi is a brand of Cola. People seem to say the brand instead of the name of the drink, but Coke, Pepsi, RC whatever are all brands of Cola.

That's how it is here. Like if you're at a restaurant and don't bother to look at the drinks and just say "Coke" its implied you also mean Pepsi if that's what they serve (though the waiter will still ask if that's ok)

i think this was something done mostly by uneducated, illiterate people; which sure, used to be a great chunk of the south but is not nearly as big as it used to be.
