Vomits and seizes up multiple times a day, sounds like a good life that child is living. At least the poor thing isn't conscious of its terrible existence I guess.

I hate when people say things like "He is such a gift".

How? How is that a gift? Because it teaches you how to live with a constant anchor that needs your 24/7 attention? Its a curse to have that burden, not a gift.

My great aunt has a kid that is severely autistic who is 52 years old. For 52 years she has had to keep an eye on her at every moment, because if you turn your back for 1 second she would try to swallow the nearest object and choke to death. Thats not a gift. Thats a curse.

This. When my wife was pregnant we had agreed that if we found out the baby was going to be severely handicapped or deformed that we would terminate the pregnancy. I'm normally against abortion except in cases like this.

These stories make me sad these days.

My daughter is autistic and that's been kind of a difficulty. We've had her in ABA therapy for a while and it does seem to be helping, but it's a gradual process. She does have delays in her speech skills and self-care ability. Can't really have a conversation with her, because her speech ability is limited to basic requests and identifying objects, people, letters, and numbers. She can mimic things she sees on TV, like trying to sing along to the Ducktales theme song. Can't ask her how her day at school was and expect any real response though.

My biggest adult fear in life is that she will never reach a point where she can be independent. That my wife and I will have to take care of her until the day we die and, when we do, she will have no one left to care for her.

She has made a lot of progress with the therapy though. From being almost non-verbal and only making gibberish sounds to being able to tell us that she wants something and verbally name things, identify some emotions, respond to her name when spoken to, etc. is something. But her social skills and behavioral skills are still pretty far behind other 5 year olds and that always worries me.

I know that isn't nearly as bad as this 3 year old, but it's kind of influenced my perspective.

My autistic son will be 11 next march. Started talking at 4 but it took a lot of effort.

Don't assume your kid's limitations. Find them. The way it seems to me, autism is just being X amount of years behind. Even if she doesn't reach true independence, all of your lives will be easier the more capable she is.

People with their dumbass, snide comments need to be beat the fuck out of. Like, mudhole stomp and walk it dry type of beating.

This child's life, if you can call it that, is a tragedy, but I doubt the poor thing is even aware of its unfortunate state. They said that he smiles and things like that, but I want to say that it's probably some type of muscle spasm, or some other involentary action, that is causing it.

This story is just soul crushing.

My biggest fear with having a kid was that something would be wrong. Like everytime we would go to the doctor for a checkup I would become anxious and incredibly nervous even when all the tests came back perfect.

When she was born I felt a lot better because the doctors said she was completely healthy, but I guess it doesn't always end there. Turns out she did have some problems with her hearing. Luckily she can still hear fine in both ears, but she does need to wear little aides to help hear everything. Doctors said its nothing that will hold her back in life and she seems to even be advancing in areas compared to other babies.

Still, it broke me when I found out and I still get angry thinking about it. And in the grand scheme of things its not going to be a big deal for her, but still...

Seeing something like this is just horribly depressing and I honestly don't know if I could handle it. Huge props to the parents that can
