How many grams of gold do you think are in it? Altogether, there is probably enough scrap gold there to still be worth a small fortune. Although, I do favour the commission hypothesis myself.

It is pretty common for thieves to steal things and melt/ sell for pennies on the dollar. Makes it less tracable too.

it's not just "how many grams"
it's also about purity, i don't know if age plays a factor.

the beads, crystals and pearls can theoretically just be picked off and sold individauly for probably a pretty penny.
but without knowing the exact makeup of the gold, whether it's 100% or just an alloy on top of other metals, or if it's all mixed together, it's impossible to predict the scrap metal value, but i can guarantee that it's worth way less than the whole thing intact.

the risk vs reward isn't worth it if they are just gonna melt it down.

But I wouldn't steal it unless I had a buyer. I'm not a huge piece of shit so even though I would TOTALLY participate in a heist, I wouldn't destroy history for its scrap value. Why risk it? The gold value is only in the tens of thousands. Surely there are simpler and easier marks for that payout.

I have a friend who works a lot with royal exhibits. It's a well known fact among the workers that churches are really naive with their security.
And usually insurance requires a lot of security in and of itself.
