My major is Zoology, most people think "lol this idiot studied zoos", when really it was a pretty intensive physiology, chemistry, and ecology degree.

If I were to apply to say, personal trainer, and I said "Bachelors in Animal Physiology" or something like that, would ZOOLOGY show up on a background check or something?

Where are you applying where the employer would think this?

One would think that if you're applying for jobs relevant to your major, the interviewer would know what a zoology degree entails. Why are you applying for a personal trainer position?

Yeah background checks usually just query a crime database to see if you've been convicted of anything. They might check out some other stuff but they don't have power to really dig.

Background checks are only a big deal if you're getting a clearance for the federal job. That's when they get annoying and a bit intrusive.

I'm trying to change careers so I'm just trying all kinds of weird jobs right now

I applied to be a park ranger and it specifically said "must have degree in WILDLIFE BIOLOGY". Wildlife Bio is a degree at my school, separate from Zoology, but they're very similar

Same with this personal training thing I just saw "must have degree in exercise science or physiology".

You'd be surprised that many people make that joke every time. When I had my old career in emergency medicine my boss asked that. "So's that like zoos or something? What's that have to do with EMS?"

I think it is a good idea to downplay or omit credentials if you are overqualified. I did that for my current job.

How do you know what they checked?

Because my school wouldn't give them information about my degree so I had to give them proof it was valid myself.

These are crappy part time jobs, not careers

It was my impression that you should make your resume "better". If you taught a new person how to use the coffee machine, you "trained new employees" etc

Yes make your resume better by lying about your actual degree. Makes sense to me. Should just say you got your BS in something useful instead if you want to lie because you're insecure about what a "crappy part-time job" would think about it.

Next door to me is a company with a department that literally all they do is validate people went to the school they say they did and earn the degree they say they have. The company in general does a lot more than that but they have a whole department dedicated to it. I'm not sure how much money the department makes but it's apparently significant because they keep hiring people for it.

I don't understand why you are insecure about how a part-time job would perceive your degree if it's a part-time job with low qualifications.
