When people talking someone drinking the Kool-Aid, what does it mean?

Also, what decade did this figure of speech come into use?

It means that you're buying into someone's bullshit.

The term comes from the Jonestown massacre, where cultists were killed with poisoned flavor-aid

Cults that gave poisoned kool-aid to massacre their followers. I think as far back as Jonestown incident in the 70s.

It refers to the mass suicide of a cult led by Jim Jones, who all drank poisoned kool aid at his command. When you drink the kool aid you are basically buying into something conventionally nonsensical and/or dangerous.

Wow, thanks.

I actually was reasonably sure I knew what the phrase went, but I wanted to make sure. I can't believe the story behind it. I had no idea it came from something like that.

I'm surprised that the company, Kool-Aid, were alright with this figure of speech. Although, presumably, they weren't.

There is nothing they can do about it, its not slandering their actual product.

Plus, it would be hard to sue 320 million people. You forget that. :D

Its the same thing as how people refer to bandages as band aids and cotton swabs as q-tips.

I thought Heavens Gate used it in their mass suicide but I just read that they used apple sauce with an epilepsy medication, vodka and a plastic bag over their heads. So I guess its just Jonestown that used K/Cool-Aid

Heaven's Gate was kinda scary. Didn't they think they were going to be transported to Haley's Comet or something?
