Why are there like barely any cool mom characters in games? Almost all of the time they're either dead for plot reasons or barely do anything

The world needs more badass moms in games

But they're usually awful people and horrible parents. John Marston and what's his name from The Last of Us, for example. Most of the others are just people who happen to have children though it's not central to the plot.

I think that what it comes down to is it's either just a part of their back story or the game is gonna be some sort of escort mission where you're protecting the child. If it's back story then the parent isn't actually there with the child and people associate that with being a bad parent. And if it's an escort mission thing, well, people hate those.

Red's mom was pretty pivotal in Pokemon. She could have to him to stay home, study, play SNES, and be normal. But she said fuck that, go catch some deadly animals to tame and fight other people

Grandia was a solid series. Sucks it died. But yeah, she was 34 and was a character to fight with for a good portion. Alas.

Selan from Lufia 2 immediately comes to mind when I think of cool video game moms.

I suppose, technically, certain female units in the Fire Emblem series count too, provided you think they're badass before/after their kid shows up.

In general, heroes seldom have mothers outside of children's programs focusing on child protagonists. Even in stories where the protagonist is supposed to be down to Earth or sentimental, they're more likely to have an aunt or a stepmother than a biological mother.

In action based stories, it humanizes the character too much to have a mother. You can't be a gun-toting, hard-drinking, bad guy killing bad-ass if you have a mommy in Connecticut. And the more fantasy-like stories often fall back on familiar fantasy tropes which involve the absence of parents. Such was a fact of life in the times in which those stories were written. Your mom and dad could die from disease and the "evil" stepmother could inherit the family estate.
