If college was free, it would obviously only apply to public colleges.

Private colleges would still exist though, especially big ones like the Ivy League schools. But how could they compete with the free colleges? If their degrees are considered more valuable.

Companies won't realistically be able to wait until people get masters degrees so they can make a masters degree the new bachelors degree. But they can say that bachelors degrees from public colleges are worthless and not worth nearly as much as a degree from a private school.

or you could attend your local state college where tuition is like 2-3k per year, not 10k. Which college you attend doesn't matter unless you are doing your graduate studies, which tuition and living expenses are paid anyways

LOL, a quick Search showed that "According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 20172018 school year was $34,740 at private colleges, $9,970 for state residents at public colleges, and $25,620 for out-of-state residents attending public universities.".

Public universities need to be elevated higher in the rankings. There are some that are up there, but most of the top 50 universities in the US are private. One possibility is that more people will start applying to them and then as a result they will get more selective.

Make colleges free, professors no longer feel the need to make courses easier, so there's a large drop out rate to compensate.

make all college public. problem solved

common knowledge that public schools are crime ridden shit holes compared to private schools, why burden higher education with the problems of public funded schools? Also if more money comes from the government to the schools than from the people directly, the needs of the people, likely quality of education, are more likely to be ignored
