Even the greats like FF7 or Persona or FF4 or Tales have really lame final dungeons.

I honestly have a hard time thinking of an RPG with kickass final dungeon. Theyre always super long or have weird annoying gimmicks

Atelier final dungeons are usually great. Not drawn out and have great music and visuals

The Northern Crater in FF7 is great. Doesn't take too long to get through and has great music.

Shitty final bosses too. It's like all of their creativity is used up by that point. Or they just have a set image of what a "final" threat should be and they go for that rather than letting their imagination guide them.

I wonder how many problems in the arts would be resolved if people didn't stand on ceremony.

Derris Kharlan / Mithos' Castle (which is 100% optional, otherwise it's just fight the pushover black dragon and be done with it)

It's a castle, which has a straight path to the final boss, and some side paths to do the whole castle to be able to finish a sidequest so you can enter the demon world (or something along the lines) called Niflheim, which they put challenges as you progress as soon as you enter the place.

You have a time limit I think with souls (which you collect here), using the Sorcerer Ring also has a negative impact in your souls, as it drains it. The place itself is a random maze, which you need to find the exit. It has like...20 Floors? I think 30 in the PS2/PS3 port.

Somewhat of a butchered explanation, but that's kind of a general idea of what I think you can consider the final dungeon.

If you don't count the 4 room linear path to the guaranteed victory albedo fight in 2 then I'd agree for 1+2. 3 dragged on a bit at times, even if you do nuke enemies by that point.

My favorite final dungeon is probably Tales of Vesperia's. Nice transition between the tiers, good spacing between save points and boss fights, enemies change between sections but keep things fresh, nice enough music, and no puzzles that are big enough they slow your progress to a crawl.

I have a few other good ones but in hindsight they had tedious aspects. Like spamming a surge of one hit or game over mechanics. Or else, terrible music that killed the entire thing.
