Then came back with a vengeance in the 10s.

What's the explanation for the "break" in the 2000s.

I remember the only major social issue then was gay marriage.

This simply isn't true, but back to the main question of the topic.

Political correctness is just a very politically correct sounding name for the same "civility" people are bemoaning the death of now. All political correctness ever meant was trying not to call people by whatever terms they found most offensive, and striving to be respectful and inclusive instead.

Why it made some people so resentful that they were asked not to use all the most offensive terms for minorities, \_()_/

Probably because the 2000's was the black culture decade, I mean almost all the top music was rap/hip-hop, more tv shows and commercial were casting black men for rolls nearly every white woman was with a black male ,we ended the decade with our first black president of the United States.

Honestly this has some validity.

I mean 9/11 in general. Western culture was more unified and we went super hard on freedom of speech, so political correctness wasn't as big a deal. I remember society in general would 100% back something like cartoons of Muhammad in the face of criticism from Muslims, but nowadays society would probably view a cartoonist doing something insulting as a jerk and are more likely to side with Muslims.
