The first 3 are. 4 kinda for a few bosses. 5 onward is better paced; the random battles aren't too frequent and they provide enough gold/exp that you rarely if ever need to seek out extra randoms.

The early games are super grindfests. Grinding is still a part of later games, but is scaled back in need to finish the story. Grinding is a must to finish 100% though.

I only really played 1 on the NES and 8 on the PS2.

1 was definitely grind-heavy, barely had a story, and iirc only had one party member, but I really liked it for those reasons.

8 gave you plenty of opportunities to grind, but it wasn't super necessary. Seemed more focus on moving the story along and exploring.

Dragon Quest 7 took me 237 hours to complete. My characters were about level 57.
