What are they selling for $57 that they're only giving you $5 for? I don't think their system is even set up to calculate that.

Like I see they're selling Melee for $60 and the TIV is $17.00 base?

Trade values always tank during these 50-60% trade value boost periods. That's to offset the people maximizing value, not to screw the consumer. This is a business not a charity, they have no reason to take the risk levied against them with higher trade in values "just because".

GameStop pays the least for a game that they think people will be willing to take because they know that most people will just take it since any method that would make them more money for the game (selling online or locally or whatever) takes too much effort to justify the difference.

Honestly, I think they were on the right track to huge financial gain with the PowerPass plan they rolled out for like a day or two last year. Rental is where they could make a killing, and allowing the renter to come back in as often as they'd like to swap games gets them back in the store where they are more likely to pre-order a new game or buy an overpriced toy. They really need to fix their software and get the program back up and running again.

This exactly. Gamestop is selling convenience in this case.
Sure, you could go online and try selling your game for $40 and possibly wait weeks maybe months.
OR, you can take this crisp $9 for it right here and now.
Especially when they do boosts towards preorders, special promos, etc.

Yeah I post on a deals forum as well and people are like "Yeah but you can get $X for it by selling it on Kijiji!"

Yeah but I also have to ignore all the "I'll give you hf that for it!" messages and having to meet with this person and bullshit and it's really not worth it a large part of the time.

Also in Canada you also need to factor the tax into the TIVs because it negates that too, so something where the TIV is really worth $40+tax.

The fact that they are selling preowned systems for $10 less than brand new and the fact that theyre giving us less than a dollar for preowned games leads me to believe that they see the writing on the wall and want to put every dime in the register that they can (hence the firm prices).

Idk if anybody remembers this, but users who are close to thirty will remember when you used to get like $30-40 when you traded in a still-relevant game. Now they give you $1.50 and sell it for $56.99.

Dude I just sold GOW to them for 35$.

Yeah you still get 30-40 for games they are selling for 55ish.

Maybe they would give better trade in values if they weren't on the verge of Toys-"R"-Us'ing at any moment now. They never had better prices and now you can just download everything so yeah they're definitely dead. I think retro game stores (esp the ones that have magic cards, which is all of them) have some time left
